“38 years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy. Since then, we’ve had a prequel trilogy, a new trilogy, and a sequel to the prequel, a prequel to the sequel…”As Lucasfilm continues its exploration of George Lucas’s universe, on the small screen and the big screen, another science fiction franchise will return after nearly 40 years of radio silence. Announced last year, Spaceballs 2 is finally giving news. Mels Brooks’ parody offers a first teaser, which mocks the expansion of the galaxy far, far away.
While no images were shown, the video consists of a reprise of the Star Wars rolling credits, recalling the Star Wars productions released since 1987. Amazon MGM Studios did not publish the teaser for the sake of the joke. The studio confirms the release window for this unique project: it's in 2027 that viewers will have a date with Spaceballs 2 or A Spaceballs 2 (if Amazon decides to go with the original title).
“May the Schwartz be with you”
In 1987, Mel Brooks tackled Star Wars. Director Mel Brooks made parody his trademark and intended to twist the codes of the galaxy far, far away to better mock them. Darth Vader became the Dark Helmet while Leia and Han Solo were reinvented to become Princess Vespa and Yop Solo. The story is a little different since it involves Yop Solo and his faithful dog-man Berk saving the princess from the clutches of Black Helmet.
The approach to this sequel remains a mystery, but we already know that part of the original cast will be involved. According to information from Deadline, Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis will reprise their respective roles, namely Yop Solo and Black Helmet. The film will even become a family story by bringing in the son of the former: Lewis Pullman. Recently seen in the MCU for Thunderbolts*, the actor is expected to have an important role in the story. We don't yet know what it will be. His family relationship with the actor who played Yop Solo suggests that he could lend his features to a parody of Kylo Ren aka Ben Solo. Actress Keke Palmer will also be joining the cast. Mel Brooks, while not directing, will reprise his role as Yogurt (Yoda).
Filmmaker Josh Greenbaum (Backstreet Dogs) will be behind the camera and will adapt a screenplay by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Gad is also writing a score, the details of which are being kept secret. We'll probably have to wait a little longer to learn more or see the first images, as filming hasn't started yet. The promise of a 2027 release suggests the project is moving in the right direction.
