The next-gen Xbox will run on AMD chips. Lisa Su has provided us with initial information on the consoles' performance and backward compatibility.
This week, Xbox surprised everyone by already teasing its next-gen consoles. The brand took the opportunity to formalize “a multi-year strategic agreement with AMD to co-design chips for a range of devices, including our next-gen Xbox consoles.” And it’s AMD’s turn to speak out, through a video in which its CEO Lisa Su speaks.
“In the future, AMD will go beyond designing custom chips for Xbox consoles and will design a complete roadmap of chips optimized for gaming. It will combine the power of Ryzen and Radeon for consoles, portable consoles, PCs, and the cloud,” she explains. The entire Xbox ecosystem will therefore be powered by AMD equipment. It had already been confirmed that the ROG Xbox Ally portable console would run on the company's APU.
What if the next Xbox ran console games... and PC games?
AMD is also keen to reassure people about backward compatibility. It is strongly suspected that the next Xbox console will actually be a PC with an interface optimized for TV. The device will therefore run PC versions of games, but should not neglect Xbox console versions. Lisa Su promises "backward compatibility so players can access their favorite titles on all platforms".
Regarding image and performance, AMD announces the construction of "a dynamic and open ecosystem that delivers the next generation of graphics and immersive gameplay powered by AI." AI will be used to accelerate the calculation of graphics rendering. The hope is to achieve a breakthrough in both image quality and frame rate with the next generation. AMD doesn't go into details, but we can easily imagine an evolution of FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution), which has finally entered the AI era in its fourth and latest version.
And that's the first information we have available. Now we have to be patient before we know more.
