In recent years, smartphones have become essential tools in emergencies. Some apps can already detect car accidents, warn of bad weather, or even alert you during natural disasters. With the arrival of new sensors and better access to local data, manufacturers are integrating more and more security features into their systems. Earthquakes are among the events that Android devices can report. Google launched an option in 2024 that sends an automatic alert starting at magnitude 4.5, thanks to a network of connected smartphones.

But this system, natively integrated into Android, remains fairly basic. It works like a switch: it is activated or not, without the possibility of customizing it. Samsung is therefore preparing to offer a more advanced version on its Galaxy devices. This new feature, spotted by the Galaxy Techie website, should be deployed with One UI 8, the future update of its mobile interface. Several screenshots show a series of new settings to tailor earthquake alerts to your preferences.

Samsung lets you choose the magnitude of the shaking from 1.0 and adds custom alerts based on the time of day

Unlike Google, Samsung gives users the ability to set the magnitude level at which an alert is sent. The range starts at 1.0, or barely perceptible shaking, up to 4.0, where the vibrations become more noticeable. It is also possible to have different thresholds depending on the time of day, for example to avoid being woken up at night by a minor earthquake. There's even an option to preview the alert before it's active.

Samsung is also adding useful features after the earthquake: a list of alerts received, quick access to nearby emergency shelters, and the ability to contact someone if needed. These elements aim to improve responsiveness in critical situations. For now, the system is not yet active, but it is already included in the installation files tested by some users. It should be officially launched with the stable version of One UI 8.
