CarPlay switches to video, as long as you don't move an inch

It wasn't just Liquid Glass. The next version of CarPlay will indeed feature the new interface shared by iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26, as announced during the WWDC keynote. But other, more substantial new features are in the pipeline for Apple. The most significant is support for video playback, which is quite ironic considering that Apple has been hunting down this feature.

No question of watching while driving

Apple couldn't decently leave the road to its rival Android Auto: at Google I/O, it was confirmed that Android's in-car interface would also support video playback. The Cupertino manufacturer will allow video app developers to integrate CarPlay support.

However, watching the latest episode of your favorite series while driving is out of the question. Apple, like Google, warns that this function will only be accessible when the car is stationary. You will need to connect your iPhone to the car's system with a cable to use it; it is also the smartphone that will determine whether the vehicle is moving or not.

Support for video playback on the car's screen will also not be available immediately following the final version of iOS 26. Manufacturers will have to enable support for video playback with CarPlay. Therefore, it's not certain that this feature will appear soon.
