What if you could rewrite the destiny of Pompeii? That's exactly what Pompeii: The Legacy offers, the historical city-builder that's already shaping up to be a serious competitor to Cities Skylines 2. Good news: a free playable demo has just arrived on Steam. And it's definitely worth a look.
A city to rebuild... 20 years after the tragedy for this competitor to Cities Skylines 2
The starting point is as original as it is promising. You play the head of a prominent Roman family, twenty years after the eruption of Vesuvius. Your mission? Rebuild the ancient city of Pompeii, neighborhood by neighborhood, generation after generation. On the agenda: managing roads, water, public buildings, commerce... and of course, the inhabitants. Because behind the walls, you also have to think about the well-being of the population, services, the economy, and even politics. We're a long way from the days of Cities Skylines 2.
Pompeii: The Legacy isn't just about looking pretty. The game immerses you in a living historical simulation, where every decision counts. You have to negotiate with the Emperor, develop trade routes across the Mediterranean, and invest in philosophy or technology to unlock new buildings and bonuses. But be careful: things don't always go as planned. As in Cities Skylines 2, random events can occur. Fires, swarms of locusts, or even new seismic tremors can disrupt your urban planning. You will have to react quickly, without losing your composure.
An already very promising demo
The demo available on Steam offers more than two hours of gameplay. It has already received several improvements since the first test versions: better interface, refined visuals, and smoother gameplay. A change of scenery if you like Cities Skylines 2.
And that's just the beginning. The developers are planning updates very soon with:
- a sandbox mode for free play,
- a more complete Mediterranean trade system,
- new production chains (wine, olive oil, etc.),
- additional dynamic events,
- and even citizen health management.
If you like demanding city-builders and are looking for a new setting, far from the modernity of Cities Skylines 2, Pompeii: The Legacy has serious arguments to make. It mixes history, strategy and narration, with a real attention to detail. It has the spirit of the best management games, but with a unique ancient touch.
