Civilization 7 is really at its worst, it's a disaster

Firaxis hoped to reverse the trend with its latest updates to Civilization 7, but the PC audience remains generally skeptical. Despite efforts to correct certain flaws, player reception on Steam continues to deteriorate, to the point that the game's rating has fallen to a historically low level for the series. A real disaster for a well-established saga.

A central mechanic increasingly rejected in Civilization 7

The heart of the discontent seems to come from the Ages system, a new feature of Civilization 7 intended to modernize the formula. Designed as a solution to reduce micromanagement at the end of the game, this mechanic partially resets the game state each time you move from one era to the next. In theory, this would allow players to change strategies mid-game, without being locked into a single objective.

But in practice, many find this system frustrating in Civilization 7. Many believe it distorts the Civilization experience by breaking the continuity of their empire's development. Some go so far as to say they no longer want to play beyond the first age, as the progression seems so artificial or repetitive. Obviously, this is not the majority, but it remains very problematic for the strategy game. Firaxis will have to react quickly.

Numerous but ineffective patches?

Since its launch, Civilization 7 has received several major fixes. A revamped interface, leader balancing, new multiplayer options... The developers are sparing no effort. But these improvements have clearly not been enough to boost the game's rating on Steam. Over the last 30 days, only 38% of user reviews have been positive, pushing the game into the "mostly negative" category. A critical threshold for such a respected series. Even though Civ 7's overall rating remains "average," the trend is clearly unfavorable. At the same time, other 4X games like Stellaris and Ara: History Untold are attracting a portion of the community. Civilization 7 thus becomes the lowest-rated Firaxis title on Steam, excluding DLCs. And that's a real pain. Source: Steam
