Maul: Shadow Lord, the upcoming Star Wars series centered on Darth Maul, could be an opportunity to pit the famous Sith against an iconic character. Indeed, this new series could feature the very first canonical confrontation between Darth Maul and Drak Vader.
What is Maul: Shadow Lord?
Centered on Darth Maul, the animated series starring Sam Witwer will focus on Darth Maul's actions after The Clone Wars. Initially, Darth Maul was introduced in The Phantom Menace. Played by Ray Park, the character instantly became a cult classic, despite his limited screen time.
In fact, it was the series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels that largely developed Darth Maul. The Clone Wars tells the story of how the former Sith rises from the ashes and decides to go it alone with his brother Savage Opress. Darth Maul becomes master of his own destiny, gains independence from the Empire, and even becomes, for a time, the leader of the crime syndicate: Crimson Dawn.
In The Clone Wars, he even reluctantly helps Ahsoka during Order 66. Darth Maul was also in possession of the Dark Lightsaber for a short time. Finally, in Star Wars: Rebels, Darth Maul once again meets his end at the hands of Obi-Wan. In short, thanks to the two animated series by Dave Filoni, Darth Maul has become a central character in the Star Wars franchise.
Maul: Shadow Lord will therefore tell the story of Maul's adventures between the events of The Clone Wars and those of Rebels. We will learn how Maul became the leader of Crimson Dawn, and how he freed himself from the Empire.
A confrontation with Vader?
Maul: Shadow Lord could also be the opportunity to stage a new and iconic confrontation between Darth Maul and Darth Vader. Indeed, the two iconic villains of the Star Wars license are both active at the same time during a given period. In the non-canonical anthology series Star Wars Tales in 2001, the two characters face off in single combat. An impressive lightsaber duel ends with Vader winning. Maul's famous double lightsaber is even cut in two.
Maul: Shadow Lord could make this confrontation a canonical reality. In Maul: Shadow Lord, Darth Maul will lead Crimson Dawn and have his own apprentice, who could be a canonical version of Darth Talon. An impressive rise to power that should logically attract the attention of the Empire and Vader. At this time, Darth Vader and the Inquisitors are hunting the surviving Jedi and renegade Force users. This means that Maul will be at the center of Darth Sidious and Vader's interrogations.
In fact, following the events of The Clone Wars, Darth Maul becomes an enemy of the Empire. Darth Sidious even faced his former apprentice and his brother in Dave Filoni's animated series. As for Darth Vader, he almost faced Darth Maul in Star Wars: Rebels. The two characters find themselves on the Sith world of Malachor in the epic finale of season 2. A totally crazy finale that brings together a slew of characters including Inquisitors, Darth Maul, Ahsoka, Ezra, Kanan Jarrus and Darth Vader. It is in this brilliant double episode that Darth Maul blinds Kanan Jarrus, after trying to turn Ezra Bridger to the dark side of the Force. As for Darth Vader, he finds himself confronted by his former apprentice: the powerful Ahsoka.
We'll see you on Disney+ in 2026 to discover Maul: Shadow Lord.
