But what's going on at PlayStation Studios? That's the big question everyone's asking. While the latter were once again largely conspicuous by their absence during the latest State of Play, the bad news continues to flow for the PlayStation family. After the controversy surrounding the reveal of Marathon (Bungie), then the announcement of Jade Raymond's departure from the head of Fairgames (Haven Studios), it's now the turn of the creators of Days Gone to be in turmoil.
A wave of layoffs announced at Bend Studio
Indeed, Bend Studio announced it yesterday via its various social networks: part of the company's workforce has unfortunately had to be laid off. "Today, we said goodbye to some incredibly talented colleagues as we transition to our next project," the statement reads. "This is a difficult time for our team, but we have immense respect for everyone who has helped us get this far. […] We are deeply grateful for their contributions." This news comes just weeks after the release of Days Gone Remastered, which itself follows the announcement of the cancellation of their last project. A project that, apparently, was a new license in the form of a service game. However, the latter never had the opportunity to be formally announced by PlayStation, and ultimately joined the long list of service games canceled by the company. Alongside it, among others: Concord, the multiplayer game The Last of Us from Naughty Dog, and even a God of War from Bluepoint Games.
A new future under construction
The good news, however, is that Bend Studio is now hard at work on its next project. Of course, it's unclear what that will be at the moment. Will PlayStation eventually reverse its position on Days Gone 2? The studio, now without 30% of its workforce (around 40 people) according to Jason Schreier, could it turn to Syphon Filter again? Or will it be a new license this time around? The answer will be revealed in the coming years. In the meantime, the remaining team announces that they "remain committed to building the future of Bend Studio with creativity, passion, and innovation."
