DC is starting from scratch. After the failure of its first film franchise, Warner Bros. has decided to entrust the responsibility of a reboot to James Gunn and Peter Safran. On July 9, a new era begins for the superhero stable. Superman is the first stone of a building that DC Studios hopes to build over several years in cinemas around the world. While the film led by David Corenswet has not yet shown what it is capable of, the question of the future of the character and his companions is already being asked. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Gunn detailed his plans for his emerging DCU. We already knew that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow would be the next step, followed by Clayface, directed by Mike Flanagan, and Peacemaker, which is set to return this summer on Max. A gallery of characters less illustrious than Clark Kent or his rival and ally Bruce Wayne. Fans of the Dark Knight can rest assured, Batman will be invited to the party. The character is set to be at the epicenter of a film directed by Andy Muschietti: The Brave and the Bold. Gunn and Safran have yet to comment on the other flagship characters in the franchise. This is especially true regarding Wonder Woman. A leading figure in the DCEU, the heroine was currently only affiliated with a series project for Max, called Paradise Island. It was supposed to tell the adventures of the Amazons of Themyscira. This will ultimately not be the only production dedicated to Diana Prince. Indeed, James Gunn has just confirmed the development of a film.
“Writing now”
While confirming that the Paradise Island series is “moving slowly”, James Gunn indicates that a film centered on the Amazon is in development. He specifies that the writers are working on it “right now”. He did not go so far as to reveal the names of those who will be responsible for adapting the DC comics, nor even who will be behind the camera. We will probably have to wait a little while to learn more about this. The news does, however, have the merit of reviving speculation about an upcoming DC superhero reunion in theaters, after the resounding failure of Justice League in 2017. When asked about the prospect of a Justice League film in the near future, James Gunn was rather reassuring. It's definitely in his plans, even with the first phase called Gods and Monsters. "Sure, but there's no Justice League in this world... not yet." He also didn't go so far as to give a release window, simply saying that it was linked to his larger plans for his DCU. We can hope that James Gunn and Peter Safran take advantage of San Diego Comic Con, a few weeks after the release of Superman, to formalize the schedule for the next few years in theaters.
