While waiting for a currently hypothetical Fallout 5, fans of the franchise can get their dose of radiation through 76. After a disastrous launch in 2018, this MMO/game-as-a-service counterpart to the franchise has managed to make up for it in the eyes of players over the years. The title also made an appearance at the Xbox Games Showcase as part of Summer Game Fest 2025 to present its latest major update focused on fishing. On this occasion, our colleagues at PCGamesN were able to interview the developers about the potential big new features to come, including an element highly requested by fans.
A great new feature to consider in Fallout 76?
At the beginning of 2025, Fallout 76 officially marked a first in a game in the franchise, allowing us to play as a ghoul. Outside of mods on previous games, such a thing had never been implemented directly by Bethesda. While waiting for a fifth installment, which is not expected before 2030, the studio clearly still has many projects in mind for its MMO/game-service.
It recently moved to its Season 21, with the Gone Fission update, which adds fishing to the gameplay loop. Following its presentation at the Xbox Games Showcase, PCGamesN was able to interview Jon Rush and Bill LaCoste, respectively creative director and lead producer of Fallout 76. Now significantly more popular than at its release, the title should still receive many updates. Among the most anticipated features by fans, after the ability to play as a ghoul, playing as a super mutant is clearly at the top of the list.
To which the two men responded: "We know that a huge number of fans officially want to play as a super mutant in a Fallout game. We like the idea, but we want it to make sense. It's already technically possible to play as a super mutant with a big power armor and the right skills. So this feature needs to fill a gap in the game." Thus, such an option would be under consideration, but the developers must find a way to make it coherent and relevant. For now, Bethesda's attention seems to be focused on potential additions to the recently launched fishing in Appalachia.
