Flip Folio: The iPad case that wants to retire Apple's Magic Keyboard

Flip Folio: The iPad case that wants to retire Apple's Magic Keyboard

Specialist in tablet and PC accessories, Logitech has unveiled its new solution for the iPad Air and iPad Pro: a magnetic case with a remote keyboard. The Flip Folio directly attacks Apple's Magic Keyboard, the brand's proprietary case, by offering an alternative with a different format. The Flip Folio offers a separate keyboard that the user can choose to use or not. When they simply want to enjoy their iPad in tablet format, for reading or browsing the web, they can either leave their keyboard at home or stick it to the back of the case on a magnetic surface provided for this purpose.

The quick test of the Logitech Flip Folio

We've been using Logitech's new case daily on our iPad Pro for a few days now. We had the opportunity to use it for several days in a classic way, in “office” mode, but also during a train journey of more than three hours.

This is obviously too little to have a firm and definitive opinion on Logitech's accessory, but this short week of use and the variety of uses we subjected the FliP Folio to allow us to have a fairly precise first opinion of the capabilities of the case/keyboard. As die-hard fans of the Magic Keyboard, we also have a solid point of comparison to judge its qualities. What did we think?

Mainly good. The format proposed by Logitech is certainly a plus compared to Apple's native solution. Not so much in terms of compactness, but especially in terms of comfort. The fact of being able to place the keyboard wherever you want, whether it's off-center in relation to the screen, on your thighs or just in the classic way is an undeniable plus when working in a small space like a train. We have also experienced this. The other significant advantage is the possibility of using the case to place the iPad in portrait format. This arrangement is simply not allowed with the Magic Keyboard. Finally, and this is anything but incidental, despite its small size and compactness, the Flip Folio's Bluetooth keyboard offers excellent typing quality and is very pleasant to use. Finally, the ability to magnetically attach it to the back of the iPad is a little extra that adds to its user-friendliness.

On the more negative side, two reservations appear after this week of testing. The first concerns its folding system, which is rather unnatural, but essential for placing the iPad. You have to press quite hard to engage the fold in a maneuver that is anything but harmonious and casts doubt on the durability of the case. Finally, the other complaint concerns the overall weight of the case. This is also a criticism we made of the Magic Keyboard during our test of the iPad Pro M4, since with its protection the weight of the iPad was almost identical to that of a MacBook Air. It's exactly the same for the Flip Folio and it's a missed opportunity to overtake Apple on a major criterion for mobile users.

On the other hand, where Logitech does significantly better than the apple brand is on the price. Its Flip Folio is sold for 179 euros for the 11-inch versions of the iPad and 199 euros for the 13-inch iPad Pro and the 13-inch iPad Air. The Logitech case will be available in three colors: black, like the one we tested, and pale gray and lilac, starting in September.
