“Chaos has a name: The Mule.”It’s been two years since the adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s novels first aired, and Foundation is making its return this July on Apple TV+. Starting July 11, viewers will be able to reunite with Hari Seldon, Gaal Dornick, and Brother in the Open as they continue to fight for the survival of humanity. As the trailer suggests, yesterday’s enemies will have to unite to face a new threat. This new threat takes the form of a new antagonist, played by none other than Pilou Asbæk. Game of Thrones fans are quite familiar with the Danish actor, who played Euron Greyjoy in the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's novels. Here, he returns to a character just as ambivalent... and well-known to readers of the Foundation Series. Proof, if any were needed, of his importance to the narrative, he occupies all the space in the first trailer for Season 3. The Mule, or Le Mulet in the French version, is one of the greatest conquerors in the galaxy. A mutant, he is capable of altering the emotions of others. A gift that Hari Seldon's psychohistory had not anticipated and which could shake the foundations of his plan to save humanity. Thanks to him, The Mule is able to convert many humans to his cause and turn his supporters against Seldon.
As a reminder, season 3 will immerse viewers 152 years after the events of season 2. The Foundation has firmly established itself beyond its modest beginnings and the Cleon Dynasty Empire is in decline. The two powers are trying to forge a fragile alliance, but The Mule threatens this stability.
Change of program
Those who have been paying attention will have noticed a change in the cast of this season 3. The Mule had indeed briefly appeared in season 2 of Foundation but in the guise of Mikael Persbrandt. Without the reasons for his departure being communicated, the actor will be replaced by Pilou Asbæk.
This will not be the only new program on the program for the coming months for the series. Creator David S. Goyer left the ship after creative differences. This departure had consequences on filming, forcing the teams to take breaks for several months. While the future seemed bleak, Apple TV+ didn't take the opportunity to abandon its ambitious adaptation of a famous science fiction universe. Ian Goldberg was hired to take over and bring season 4 to fruition. He is currently working on its development. We can therefore hope that the series will return to the small screen within two years, giving everyone time to come up with new, high-quality episodes.
