Free brings true 5G to iPhone and you won't have to pay anything

5G+, or 5G SA, is making a strong debut with French operators, and Free is not missing the opportunity. The operator is finally offering its technology to Apple users, a few months after launching it exclusively on Android. This is very good news for iPhone owners, who can now enjoy this technology at no extra cost.

What is 5G+ and why is it different?

Unlike so-called "non-standalone" (NSA) 5G, which still relies on the 4G core network, Free's 5G+ (or 5G SA for Stand Alone) is based on a 100% 5G infrastructure on the 3.5 GHz frequencies. This major difference allows for increased performance compared to traditional 5G, including potentially higher speeds (see below), significantly reduced latency and improved network security.

Free also mentions access to VoNR (Voice over New Radio), which allows calls to be made directly over the 5G network, offering superior audio quality and faster call setup, without the usual switch to 4G.

Who can benefit from it at Apple?

You must have a Free 5G Plan to enjoy the benefits of 5G+. Models from the iPhone 15 onwards are affected, including the entire iPhone 16 range (iPhone 16e, iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max) and the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max.

These iPhone models join the more than 100 5G+ compatible smartphone models at Free.

How do I activate 5G+ on my iPhone?

Activation is not automatic. To take advantage of Free 5G+, a few steps are necessary:

  • Check the compatibility of your smartphone (iPhone 15 minimum) and the 5G 3.5 GHz network coverage.
  • Install the latest version of iOS.
  • Activate the 5G+ option in your Free Subscriber Area (under “My Options”).
  • Restart your iPhone or activate/deactivate Airplane mode.
  • In iOS settings: Settings > Cellular Data > Options > Voice and Data, select 5G Auto and activate the 5G SA and Voice options on 5G Standalone.

Should you rush to 5G+?

While the arrival of 5G+ on iPhone is excellent news, it is important to temper your enthusiasm. Although Free advertises national coverage, the reality on the ground can present gray areas, particularly on the outskirts of large cities and in rural areas. The promised speeds are not always there, especially during peak hours.

5G SA is a young technology and its activation will not disrupt the daily lives of most users. For most everyday uses (browsing, social networks, classic streaming), 5G NSA (the "classic" 5G) remains largely sufficient. If your plan or device is not compatible, it is more prudent to wait a few more months to better benefit from this technology.

However, for users of compatible iPhones (or Android smartphones) who are already subscribed to the Free 5G Plan, the activation of 5G+ is a welcome improvement that opens the way to new experiences.
