The end is already announced for the best Star Trek series

Paramount+ has confirmed that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end after a fifth season. The streaming platform officially announced the renewal of the program this Thursday, June 12, for a final six-episode run.

A short fifth season

This announcement comes just weeks before the broadcast of season 3, scheduled for July 17 in the United States (and France), with a double premiere broadcast on the platform. Subsequent episodes will be released online every Thursday, until the finale on September 11. The fourth season is already in production.

Producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman made the best of a bad situation, praising the platform's commitment: "From the beginning, Strange New Worlds wanted to remain true to what Star Trek represents — boundless curiosity, hope, and the belief that a better future is possible." The three men say they are "grateful to have been able to complete [their] five-season mission, as [they] had envisioned it."

For fans, the planned announcement of the end of their favorite series has a bitter taste. First, because the final season 5 will only offer 6 episodes, instead of the ten episodes of previous seasons. And also because many would have liked the adventure of Captain Pike and his crew to continue longer!

In reality, Strange New Worlds couldn't last forever. Captain Pike's fate has long been sealed: he has been known to fans since his appearance in Star Trek: Discovery, and even since the original series in the 1960s. The plot of Strange New Worlds takes place a few years before James T. Kirk takes command of the USS Enterprise... in place of Pike.

This third season will feature the cast led by Anson Mount (Christopher Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Number One) and Ethan Peck (Spock), accompanied by Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding... and Paul Wesley, in the role of James T. Kirk.

Season 5 of Strange New Worlds will of course not mark the end of Star Trek on television. The upcoming Starfleet Academy series has already landed a second season, though it's the only new project on the horizon so far. There are several rumors circulating about the film, but nothing solid. A film supposed to tell the story of the creation of Starfleet was announced about a year and a half ago, with no news since. As for Patrick Stewart, he's actively campaigning for a feature film centered on Captain Picard—but at 84, time is running out!
