In recent months, Google has gradually integrated the various Google Gemini tools into the Google Workspace suite, with some features that have already made a lot of noise, such as the integration of podcasts into Google Docs.
During the last Google I/O conference in recent weeks, Google reaffirmed its desire to position its artificial intelligence at the heart of its ecosystem, in particular to catch up with OpenAI.
And while we already know that this will happen through other tools in the Google Workspace suite, Gmail is not spared...
A feature already present... but discreet!
If you have a slight feeling of déjà vu when reading this announcement from Google, it's actually not a coincidence! Indeed, the firm had already announced the launch of this feature in June 2024, barely a year ago.
At the time, Google offered users the option to manually trigger this feature. But if with a simple click from their Gmail inbox, Google Workspace users can already summarize emails, the success of this feature was not really there until now…
New automatic discussion threads
In order to develop new uses, and especially to demonstrate the full interest of this feature, Google will make some changes to democratize uses.
In a post published last Thursday on the Google Workspace site, the firm announced the arrival of "summary cards", in other words discussion threads that take into account several messages exchanged on a single subject.
According to Google, these summaries emails could even take into account up to two weeks of email exchanges, with the promise of bringing a real productivity gain to businesses.
A feature still unavailable
Although this new feature was announced several days ago, it should be noted that it is not yet available. Moreover, Google has not communicated a precise date for this deployment, which should be done gradually.
As we can see in the preview shared by the company, these AI-generated summaries should appear primarily on mobile from the Gmail application, but they should also be present in the computer version.
For users who wish, Google has also specified that it will leave the possibility of disabling these features, or requesting an email summary in the case where the "summary card" has not been triggered.
