God of War: Bad news for the highly anticipated next game

While no official announcement has yet been made, the upcoming God of War game centered on Greek mythology is making headlines again... but not necessarily for good reasons. Indeed, the latest rumors aren't very reassuring, even if nothing has been confirmed.

Bad news for God of War

In fact, according to Jeff Grubb, a well-known journalist in the industry and accustomed to scoops, the next God of War project has reportedly been pushed back internally to 2026. A discreet revelation, slipped into his podcast, which once again fuels speculation surrounding this mysterious prequel. A leak from a podcast, not a press release

At around 31:45 of his video, Grubb mentions an "unannounced project related to God of War" and specifies that the game is now planned for 2026. No date is given, nor any details on the release window. But the indication is clear: development will take longer than expected.

A prequel still very vague

This new title, not yet officially revealed by Santa Monica Studio, would be distinct from the Nordic episodes (God of War 2018 and Ragnarök). It would be a return to the roots, in the character's Greek period, which suggests a prequel featuring a younger Kratos. Nothing has been confirmed on this subject, but several concordant sources speak of a single-player game refocusing on the hero's early days, before his exile to the Nordic lands. Other sources also mention the possibility of playing his brother Deimos.

The exact reason for God of War's delay remains unknown, but some mention the voice actors' strike that has paralyzed part of the industry in recent months. A return of actor Antony Del Rio (voice of young Kratos in some content) could also be considered if the project explores the pre-Chains of Olympus period.

Other hypotheses suggest that the style of the game could evolve, with rumors suggesting an isometric or semi-narrative approach. In this case, the additional delays could allow Santa Monica to refine a new formula.
