God of War: The new game would be a 2.5D Metroidvania spin-off

God of War: The new game would be a 2.5D Metroidvania spin-off

There's news regarding the next God of War game. As the franchise celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, rumors have been circulating for several weeks about the series' future, with two projects in the works. After rumors surrounding a remaster compilation, it seems that Kratos is finally back via a spin-off (i.e., an alternative game).

The latter would take place in the Greek era and would be planned for 2025. In a second phase, a new major game with a new saga that would take place in ancient Egypt would also be in preparation.

Today, a few hours before the next Summer Game Fest conferences, including PlayStation's State of Play, we learn a little more about the spin-off game, which would be a 2.5D Metroidvania.

A new genre for Kratos and the God of War license?

It is once again through journalist and insider Tom Hendersson that we have just learned that the next God of War game could be revealed in the coming hours. On the other hand, this new game should not be the next major opus in the saga, but a more modest secondary project.

The journalist and insider confirmed on Twitter/X that the next God of War game should feature 2.5D graphics and a Metroidvania formula, very different from the formulas we have seen so far in the saga.

According to the first rumors, this God of War game would be planned for this year and would therefore offer a Metroidvania formula similar to the game Blasphemous. The title would take place in ancient Greece, before the advent of the God Kratos. The character Deimos would return as a playable character. The game would be developed by Mega Cat Studios with supervision from Santa Monica Studio.
