God of War: A new leak for the next game in the franchise, that's going to change

Shortly before the State of Play on June 4, 2025, where it was unfortunately conspicuous by its absence, a leak gave us a glimpse of what the next game in the God of War franchise would offer. This time, it would be a 2.5D metroidvania, with more modest ambitions than the last games from Santa Monica. Shortly after, another leak revealed more information suggesting that this new game will stand out even more from its predecessors.

The new game in the God of War family leaks again

Three years after God of War Ragnarok, the fate of the famous franchise was hanging in the balance. The latest title brought the Kratos saga in Scandinavian mythology to a close, and Santa Monica seemed to have finished with our favorite bald, bearded man, once the very good free DLC Valhalla was deployed. The studio is reportedly working on a brand new franchise, with Cory Barlog at the helm. According to numerous rumors and a recent leak, the next game in the franchise will be a sort of more modest "buffer" title while waiting for the next adventures of Kratos or his son Atreus.

The next God of War game will therefore be presented in the form of a metroidvania, apparently heavily inspired by the very memorable Blasphemous. We therefore expect a particularly dark atmosphere, and potentially a certain difficulty. However, this would not be the only major change that would set this new opus apart from the others. Indeed, according to insider Shpeshal Nick (via MysticMsa3d on X.com), it would not even be a game centered on Kratos, but his brother Deimos, thus marking a return of the franchise to Ancient Greece, before Kratos became a god.

Also according to the insider, this next game in the God of War universe, apparently developed by Mega Cat Studios under the supervision of Santa Monica, should be announced later this year. Given its absence from the last State of Play, we'll probably have to come back later. Likewise, all this information should be taken with a grain of salt while we wait for an official presentation.
