Google is starting to roll out a visual overhaul of its Phone app. Some beta users can already try out some interesting new features.
A new interface for Google Phone calls and history
The visual overhaul affects several screens in the Phone app, including the active call screen, which now features larger, rounded buttons to make them easier to identify and use. Contact names and photos are also highlighted, providing a clearer and more pleasant presentation.

The Recents tab also benefits from some adjustments: calls made are now displayed on a contrasting background with rounded edges. A detail that is part of the desire to make the interface more consistent with the visual codes of Material 3 Expressive, while improving readability.
Two new gestures for answering calls
Beyond the design, this update introduces a new option: customizing the gesture to use to answer a call. Two possibilities are offered. The first, called "Single press", presents separate buttons for Answer and Decline, with a simple tap. More classic, this option aims to simplify the action for users who are not comfortable with gestures.

The The second, called "Swipe horizontally," uses the well-known principle of swiping: a central slider in the shape of a phone allows you to answer by sliding to the right or reject the call by sliding to the left. Everything is presented in a refined interface with pill-shaped elements, consistent with the new visual style. These changes are not yet available to all users of the Google Phone app, but it should be soon.
