It's a project that's been in the pipeline for a very long time: the live-action adaptation of the Disney animated film Hercules. Initially entrusted to Guy Ritchie, the Russo brothers were finally chosen after the departure of the original director. The project is moving slowly, and the directors of Avengers: Doomsday are reportedly in a major disagreement with the studio over the direction production should take.
Hercules in live-action, a project struggling to see the light of day
In 2020, we learned that Disney intended to adapt a cult cartoon: Hercules into live-action. After directing the film Aladdin in 2019, Guy Ritchie was chosen for this project, but the director decided to leave the ship. This is how the studio with the big ears turned to the Russo brothers to take charge of this live-action adaptation. Except that the project is moving very slowly. Anthony and Joe Russo had given us some information on its progress. The duo had explained that they were awaiting a script to be written by Dave Callaham, the screenwriter behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
After the box-office failure of the latest live-action adaptations of its cartoons, with the exception of Lilo & Stitch, Disney is eagerly awaiting a turn from fans. Last November, it was rumored that the studio had finally made a good decision. Indeed, according to insider Daniel Richtman, the project was to tell the story of Hercules from the point of view of Hades, the fearsome lord of the underworld. And Disney has even reportedly found the actor to play him.
Disney and the Russo brothers can't reach an agreement
Today, the live-action Hercules film is back in the news. According to Daniel Richtman's sources, production is still in development. Except that there is reportedly a disagreement between the Russo brothers and the American studio. Indeed, according to the insider, Disney has changed its mind and no longer wants to offer a remake telling the story of the demigod from Hades' perspective, but rather to make a remake faithful to the cartoon.
For their part, the directors of the next Avengers: Doomsday would like to rename the film Hades and focus on the villain's story.
It's a huge disagreement between the two parties and it could well slow down even more the development of the production if no decision is made. It is also possible that if Anthony and Joe Russo do not get their way, they will decide to leave the project themselves.
