Google continues to develop its artificial intelligence tools with a new feature. A new voice mode has just appeared in its mobile app. The goal: to make exchanges more fluid, without using the keyboard.
For several weeks, Google has been quietly rolling out advanced voice features in its Gemini assistant. On mobile, users can now interact orally with artificial intelligence thanks to Gemini Live. A full-screen interface is even starting to display live responses, now with real-time subtitles for greater discretion. But that was just the beginning.
Google is moving up a gear with a new service called Search Live. Presented at the I/O 2025 conference, this mode allows you to communicate with AI directly from the Google app, without going through Gemini. It integrates with “AI Mode,” an interface designed to facilitate voice exchanges with the search engine.
Google is testing Search Live, a voice feature in its search app
Search Live is based on the same engine as Gemini Live, namely Project Astra. As reported by 9to5Google, the feature is being tested on Android and iOS via Search Labs. It's activated via an animated waveform icon with a sparkling star below the search bar. It replaces the Google Lens shortcut, which was previously used to access the gallery. It can also be activated via a round button in AI Mode conversations. The interface appears full screen with a light or dark background, and buttons to mute the sound or view a transcript. Currently, the latter button opens the text interface and pauses the voice conversation.
Google also offers four different voices for interaction: Cosmo, Neso, Terra, and Cassini. The AI can ask precision questions to refine the search, while displaying the sources used in a scrolling carousel. The user can ask follow-up questions, even after leaving the app, thanks to background management. On iOS, Search Live relies on the Live Activities system. Video streaming via the camera is not yet available, but should follow, as with Gemini Live. For now, only a few accounts have access to it.
