During WWDC 25, Apple unveiled the iOS 26 update. In addition to its new design, the operating system features a completely redesigned Phone app. This is the most significant update to the app since the iPhone was launched. Since 2007, the app's interface hasn't changed much. Apple has always remained faithful to a five-pane interface: Favorites, Recents, Contacts, Keyboard, and Messaging.
A New Interface for Phone
To mark the unveiling of the Liquid Glass design, Apple decided to break the mold by abandoning this interface. In iOS 26, the Phone app will benefit from a new "unified layout" that combines favorites, recent calls, and voicemails in one place. This approach is intended to be simpler and clearer. At the bottom of the screen, there are now only three sections: calls, contacts, and keypad. This is a welcome refresh.
The latest news is that it will be possible to keep the traditional interface through a setting within the application. This way, users who are reluctant to change will not be completely disoriented.
Two ultra-practical functions
That's not all. Apple is also announcing a function to prevent spam. The application has a new button that allows you to launch a waiting message. You can require that people who call you first leave a message to identify themselves. Users will thus be able to "decide whether they want to answer or ignore the call."
The new Phone app also has a Hold Assist mode, or "assistance while on hold" in French. The function will intervene when a user has been put on hold by a company's customer service. Rather than waiting long minutes hanging on the phone for an agent to finally answer you, you will be able to step away from your iPhone. Once hold music is detected, it will stay on the line for you. When an agent is ready to speak to you, you will be notified by your smartphone. To launch the mode, you will need to click on the button provided for this purpose in the call window.
To test these features today, you can install the first developer beta of iOS 26. If you want to avoid bugs, we recommend waiting for the public beta, scheduled for next month, or, even better, the final and stable version which is expected during the fall.
