“I’ll look for you, I’ll find you… and I’ll show you my pink panties.”Liam Neeson takes over from Leslie Nielsen and becomes the new face of the Is There a Cop? saga. The parody saga has lost none of its taste for dubious jokes and proves it through a crazy trailer.
Is There a Cop to Save the World? follows Lieutenant Frank Drebins Jr., son of the main character from the previous installments. He heads the prestigious Special Brigade and uses his extraordinary skills to fight crime. In a new high-flying mission, the character will join forces with a grieving woman to lead the investigation. Neeson will be playing opposite Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser in this comedy that intends to make fun of action movies.
We can already notice the presence of “Sound of the Police”, already a guest in the film Top Cops with Bruce Willis. The parody will even play on the territory of the films carried by Neeson himself by summoning one of his most cult lines: “I’ll find you.” Mission: Impossible (the mask) or even James Bond (a cheap Q), everyone should get their share in this comedy directed by Akiva Schaeffer. The director is already quite used to this kind of exercise, since he is the one we owe Chip and Dale: The Risk Rangers released in 2022 and parodying the film industry and its emblematic figures.
Is parody on the rise?
While platforms have made action and comedy their stock in trade, from Red Notice to Murder Mystery via The Gardener, the genre had been rather discreet in cinema. However, parody seems to be coming back to the forefront with the return of Is There a Cop? but also Space Travel 2 confirmed a few days ago by Amazon MGM. The fact remains that, like animation, action has suffered from the health crisis. Audiences have become accustomed to discovering the genre's productions from their living rooms, and no longer seem really ready to cross the threshold of a cinema to enjoy new releases.
The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling, was a notable failure, while Ballerina is well on its way to being a disappointment as well. Even Mission: Impossible 8, which benefited from a dantesque promotional campaign as much as the personality of Tom Cruise to make its mark, could experience some difficulty achieving any form of profitability. The Final Reckoning has so far grossed just $506 million worldwide, on a budget of $400 million (excluding marketing costs).
The question is, does action still have a place at the global box office? Can comedy reconcile viewers with the genre? Reply on August 13th t with Y does he have a cop to save the world? at the cinema.
