During a recent interview, actor Tom Hiddleston discussed his return in Avengers: Doomsday. The Loki actor discussed his return, the pleasure of reprising his character's role, and the presence of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Doom.
Tom Hiddleston: Our Eternal Loki
It's been almost 15 years since actor Tom Hiddleston has been the face of Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since the first Thor (2011), he has delivered a remarkable performance as the Asgardian God. The British actor has brought all the nuance and ambiguity to this cult character, one of the most beloved in the MCU.
After his death at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Loki made his return in Avengers: Endgame. A variant of the God of Lies who manages to escape into the twists and turns of the multiverse. In the series Loki, he is caught by the TVA. He then becomes an agent of this organization that protects the multiverse, before becoming, despite himself, the God of the multiverse, taking the place of He Who Remains. Loki will therefore return as such, in a whole new context, on the occasion of Avengers: Doomsday.
Tom Hiddleston's comments
During an appearance on Josh Horowitz's podcast, Tom Hiddleston discussed his return in Avengers: Doomsday. He revealed that at the time Loki ended, he still had no idea he was going to return in Doomsday. A pleasant surprise for him, as he enjoyed playing the terrible Loki:
Quite honestly, I didn't know I was going to come back. I thought that was the end. I didn't know the plan at the time. But it's very exciting. It's an extraordinary privilege to still be on this team. There are still stories to tell. I feel like the character has grown along with me. It's truly an honor to still be on the team.
It's true that Loki has evolved enormously over the course of his appearances in the MCU. He went from being a supervillain in the pay of Thanos, to an ambiguous antagonist seeking the throne of Asgard, to an ally of Thor, and then becoming an agent of the TVA, before ending up as God of the multiverse. Quite an evolution.
Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars underwent major rewrites following the firing of Jonathan Majors. Kang was replaced by Doom as the main villain of the story, while Robert Downey Jr was brought back by the Russo brothers to play the famous Dr. Doom.
In his interview, Tom Hiddleston also spoke about this phenomenal return of Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU, swapping the character of Iron Man for that of Doom. He didn't hold back in singing the praises of his colleague:
It's remarkable. Absolutely extraordinary. I found out about it at the same time as the rest of the world. It was a completely secret thing. When I heard the news, I sent a message to Kevin Feige with exclamation points. Then, I just sent him "RDJ?" Robert is synonymous with the MCU. He's at the center of it. He must be very excited to be back and playing in a different color.
It's not yet known what role Loki will play in the next two Avengers, but it's rumored that the Asgardian God could be one of Doom's first victims. That Doom could attack Loki to steal his multiversal powers, and become the God Emperor Doom of Secret Wars.
