During the State of Play broadcast last night, PlayStation provided an update on numerous game releases expected in the coming months. And while, as with every conference, it was an opportunity for the publisher to highlight long-announced titles, such as Pragmata, Silent Hill f, or First Light 007, for example, it was also obviously an opportunity for the publisher to announce new projects with great fanfare. Like, for example, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, which had the honor of closing the show.
PlayStation announces MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls
Developed by Arc System Works in collaboration with Marvel Games, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls promises to let us experience the world of superheroes like never before. Indeed, in this 4v4 tag team fighting game, players will have the opportunity to embody some of their favorite characters in an experience designed to suit all types of audiences. "Whether this is your first fighting game or you are a veteran of the genre, Arc has integrated controls and gameplay mechanics that are easy to learn," the studio states.
However, this does not mean that MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will not offer "the depth and versatility necessary for high-level competition." Quite the opposite. "Typically, a VS team fighting game requires the player to get to know several characters. But for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character to play," assures Kazuto Sekine, the game's director. "We designed the mechanics so that you can perform a variety of actions with […] simple inputs."
As a Marvel game, players will be able to count on the presence of many iconic superheroes and supervillains. From Captain America to Ghost Rider, including Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, and even Storm, there will be plenty of choice. And each of them will obviously be able to count on the presence of a little touch specific to Arc, whether in their design or in their style of play. Moreover, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will even be able to count on the presence of characters who have never been playable in a fighting game until now.
A game that wants to redefine the genre
Of course, one of the specificities of the title will then be to offer a versus system based on teams of four, where most games in the genre are generally limited to 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3. Originally, we believed that the appeal of team-based VS fighting games lay in the intensity of battles with multiple characters on screen at the same time, explains Sekine. In addition, one of the appeals of Marvel comics is seeing the vast array of characters come together to create all sorts of unique combinations.
“With these two ideas in mind, we concluded that creating a 4v4 team VS system would not only be the best way to create these extraordinary moments, but also to evolve the tag fighting genre,” concludes the director of MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Extraordinary moments that will then come to life within numerous stages filled with Easter eggs for fans to discover, all under the auspices of the Japanimation graphic style for which Arc System Works is known today. And all of this will then be available from 2026 in MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, exclusively on PS5 and PC.
