Samsung's next generation of high-end smartphones could mark a turning point. Several models would become thinner while integrating a more powerful zoom. This change of direction would be based on new optical technology.
Smartphone manufacturers regularly seek to lighten and refine their devices. This trend is often accompanied by compromises on battery life or photo quality. But some manufacturers seem to have found solutions to reconcile thinness and performance, without sacrificing high-end components or power.
Samsung is reportedly preparing a thinner-than-ever Galaxy S26 range for 2026. According to several leaks, all models, including the most powerful, will adopt a more compact design. At the same time, a new, more precise optical zoom is also on the agenda. The goal is to modernize the appearance while providing visible improvements in the photo. The strategy is reminiscent of the already very thin Galaxy S25 Edge, which appears to have served as a full-scale test.
Samsung makes the Galaxy S26 Ultra thinner than ever and improves its camera sensor
According to leaker Ice Universe, via the Chinese social network Weibo, the Galaxy S26 and S26 Plus could be around 6.x mm thick, compared to 7.2 mm for the Galaxy S25 and 7.3 mm for the S25+ respectively. Even the Galaxy S26 Ultra would be affected, with an estimated thickness of 7.x mm compared to 8.2 mm currently. This increase in finesse would be possible thanks to a new more compact optical structure. Samsung is reportedly working on internally repositioning components to free up space, without removing features.
Finality wouldn't be the only change. The Galaxy S26 series could also feature a new 12 MP 3x telephoto lens, compared to 10 MP on the current generation. This improvement would affect all models, except for the possible Edge version, which would not be equipped with it. A more precise zoom would allow for capturing more details without losing sharpness, especially in low light.
It's also possible that the aperture or sensor size could be revised upwards, for better overall performance. Samsung is also reportedly considering replacing the Plus model with a new Edge version, but nothing has been decided yet. The commercial success of the Galaxy S25 Edge could influence this direction for 2026.
