After the recent release of Thunderbolts*, the next MCU project will be the series Ironheart scheduled for Disney+ on June 24th. In July, the film Fantastic Four: Beginnings will kick off Phase 6 of the MCU, and then, in December 2026, the Avengers will return to the big screen with Avengers: Doomsday. On top of all that, Marvel Studios is reportedly developing a new project about a forgotten superhero and important character from Marvel Comics.
Marvel is preparing a film about a forgotten superhero
Marvel Studios continues to expand its cinematic universe with major upcoming productions. Starting with the arrival of the Fantastic Four in the MCU this summer and the return of the Russo brothers to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will be an opportunity to see Robert Downey Jr. again, but this time in the Doctor Doom costume (or Doctor Doom in the original version). These next two Avengers films have had their release dates pushed back and are now expected for December 2026 and December 2027.
While Marvel is currently focusing on filming Doomsday, the studio is not forgetting to prepare for the future of its MCU. As insider Daniel Richtman reports, the House of Ideas is reportedly developing a project centered on a forgotten superhero that audiences have only seen once since 2022. This character is Hercules.
Fans saw him in the post-credits scene of Thor: Love and Thunder and was played by Brett Goldstein. The God of Thunder challenged Zeus (played by Russell Crowe) and enraged his son Hercules, who vowed to avenge his father.
Hercules, an important Marvel character who is slow to arrive in the MCU
Since this sequence, which teased a possible future confrontation between the two superheroes, Hercules has not been seen in the MCU. He is one of the important characters in Marvel Comics. He first appeared in The Avengers #10 in 1964 and was a member of the Avengers. He also played a pivotal role in the plots of Civil War and Secret Invasion.
For now, this Hercules project that Marvel is reportedly developing is just a rumor circulating based on information from Daniel Richtman. Neither Marvel Studios nor Brett Goldstein have officially announced his return.
However, his actor has already stated that he would be willing to return if the studio greenlights a project. It is also possible that Hercules could be part of Avengers: Doomsday as the return of Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, has been confirmed.
