Meta has filed a lawsuit against Joy Timeline, the Hong Kong-based publisher behind the apps CrushAI and Crushmate. These apps generate nude images using AI from photos of real people, all without the victims' consent, of course. Earlier this year, the website 404media reported the presence of thousands of advertisements on these apps, broadcast on Meta's social networks (Facebook and Instagram).
A headache for the entire tech world
It turns out that 90% of the traffic recorded by CrushAI comes from Meta's platforms. The company isn't sacrificing everything on the altar of advertising just yet, and has therefore decided to crack down on this publisher: "We will continue to take the necessary measures—including legal action—against those who abuse our platforms in this way."
The creators of these apps use sophisticated technologies to evade malicious ad detection systems. This has led to the development of new analysis tools to better identify suspicious ads, even without explicit nudity. Once detected, they are removed, along with the Facebook and Instagram accounts promoting these apps.
This long-term fight cannot be limited to Meta. "Because 'nudification' apps are promoted all over the internet — including in app stores — removing them from a single platform is not enough," the company explains. It therefore shares its information with other companies in a database of URLs identified as violating its rules. More than 3,800 links have been submitted since March 2025 within the Tech Coalition.
