Meta will finally offer passkeys to replace passwords in Facebook and Messenger

Google has offered passkeys for years, as have Amazon, Microsoft, eBay, PayPal, TikTok, and many others… but Meta clearly wasn't in too much of a hurry to do the same.

A future without passwords

That's now fixed, or close to it: Facebook will soon offer a passkey for iOS and Android mobile devices. Messenger will follow in a few months. The same passkey can be used for both services. To create a passkey, you will need to go to your account settings; the Facebook app will also offer to generate a key when you log in.

This is good news, because passkeys are the best current solution for replacing passwords: they are replaced by the device's biometric system (fingerprint or facial recognition) or by its unlock code. No need to remember the password for each service, or to save it in a manager.

Furthermore, passkeys eliminate the need for a second authenticator (by SMS or a code sent in another app). They are also immune to the risks of phishing. This technology is an industry standard, it was developed within the FIDO alliance, of which Meta is a member, along with all major tech companies. WhatsApp had already beaten Facebook and Messenger to it, on Android and iOS.

While passkeys have many advantages, everything is not yet perfect. Several services are still missing—Meta was one of them—and exporting passkeys is still complicated. With iOS 26, Apple has addressed this problem. But everyone needs to get on board.
