Only 32% of French SMEs use AI: a revolution that is still timid

While artificial intelligence tools are multiplying and uses are becoming more widespread, it seems that French companies are still far behind, particularly SMEs and mid-cap companies.

According to a study conducted by Bpifrance and published this Wednesday, artificial intelligence does not yet seem to be at the center of business leaders' concerns.

32% of SMEs and mid-cap companies use AI

While Sam Altman recently announced that one in ten people in the world uses ChatGPT, it can legitimately be said that artificial intelligence is a strategic issue for the future of businesses.

In the study "AI in SMEs and French mid-sized companies: a quiet revolution, among the most striking figures that justify this title, only 38% of the 1,209 business managers believe that AI is part of the future of their organization.

Even more worrying, only 32% of the companies surveyed have already taken action by adopting artificial intelligence in their strategy. But while these figures may seem very surprising, the 27% of executives who are skeptical about AI also show that the uses of these technologies have not yet become widespread.

Disparities according to executive training

While only 58% of executives believe that artificial intelligence can impact the survival of their company in the next three to five years, the Bpifrance study shows numerous disparities based on profiles.

Just like the generation gap that certain generations experienced with the arrival of the internet, artificial intelligence also seems to be divisive. While 67% of managers under 35 use AI, only 46% of more senior profiles between 46 and 55 and between 56 and 65 do so.

Uncertainty about costs and uses?

Beyond the figures showing that French companies are behind in adopting artificial intelligence, this study also reveals more or less well-founded reasons.

Indeed, 30% of those surveyed believe that using artificial intelligence in their company would represent too high costs, preferring to focus on other investments.

Misuse of AI is also among these reasons for 30% of managers surveyed, including the fear of sharing confidential data.

Finally, 23% of Companies say they do not use artificial intelligence because they believe they have not identified relevant uses. Unfortunately, this is explained by the 43% of companies that say they do not analyze their actions in managing their business, even if it is possible that the figures have changed, the Bpifrance study having been conducted between October and December last year.
