European companies are rubbing their hands. The European Commission's stated desire to offload American technologies will benefit several big names on the old continent, starting with OVHcloud. Brussels is reportedly in advanced discussions with the French cloud specialist group to gradually replace the cloud services provided by Microsoft Azure, according to Euractiv.
Sovereign Cloud Rather Than American Cloud
"Discussions are indeed underway, both with the Commission and with other public and private institutions and organizations studying projects to migrate to a sovereign cloud," an OVHcloud spokesperson confirmed to the publication. The Commission already has a contract with the company, but no final decision has yet been made to completely withdraw Azure.
The Commission's objective is twofold. First, to gain greater control over data and digital infrastructure. Other companies should benefit from this, such as Scaleway (France), Aruba (Italy), and IONOS (Germany), which are considered potential alternatives. The European executive then hopes to influence national administrations to do the same in their public tenders, which would mark a real break with the domination of American digital giants.
This move by Brussels, which is part of the Eurostack strategy to promote European cloud solutions, is all the easier since the two departments in charge of digital within the Commission (DG CNECT and DG DIGIT) are now placed under the supervision of a single Commissioner, Henna Virkkunen, in charge of technological sovereignty.
Obviously, the pill may be difficult to swallow for the American giants who are clumsily trying to curry favor with Donald Trump while trying to distance themselves from him as much as possible when it comes to attracting European customers. A balancing act that Microsoft recently attempted with varying degrees of success.
