Pirates of the Caribbean fans have been waiting since 2017 for the saga to return to the big screen, without Disney having announced anything concrete since. While the studios with the big ears have approved a sixth installment in the franchise, many questions remain about the nature of this sequel and the casting. Following rumors of Johnny Depp's return as Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom has also hinted at a possible comeback for Will Turner.

At the end of May, we took stock of what we know about Pirates of the Caribbean 6, the sequel to the franchise that Disney favored over female spin-off ideas. Rather than exploring other plots in the fictional universe derived from the famous attraction, the studios prefer to exploit the formula that made the saga successful in the 2000s and 2010s. During an interview broadcast by This Morning, the star reiterated his interest in playing Will Turner's character, something he had already done in the past.

Personally, I think it would be great to get the whole team back together. That would be great, but there are always different ideas, so we'll see where it goes.
For Disney, the goal is probably to successfully reunite the original trio to create real anticipation for the sequel, something the studios will only be able to do with the approval of Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp.
Can fan service destroy Pirates of the Caribbean?
First of all, you should know that the author of this article, like you no doubt, would love to see Jack, Will, and Elizabeth back in a film of the saga. On the other hand, and as is the case with other Disney franchises like Star Wars, the pitfall to avoid is fan service. Bringing familiar faces back into the spotlight is a great way to attract audiences to the theaters, but it's far from enough to keep the hype going and ensure a lucrative box office. By putting the names of Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley on the poster for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 (if they succeed), the big-eared studios are ensuring the return of a nostalgic audience, who shouldn't sacrifice a coherent and polished story. The fourth and fifth films were criticized for their script, questionable humor, and bland characters, and if they really want to resurrect the franchise, Disney needs to give it more than just a cast. The wind of freedom that blew through the original trilogy in the early 2000s contributed to the success of the saga as much as the actors, the plot, the dialogues, and the staging. It's this magic that studios must revive, and that requires a (very) good film idea.
