The current Annecy International Animation Film Festival is an opportunity for fans of the genre to get a sneak peek at upcoming animated productions. Among the most anticipated is the fifth installment in the Toy Story franchise. Pete Docter, Pixar's artistic director, was present and revealed the, or rather the big baddie of this episode.
Pixar gives fans this gift for Toy Story's 30th anniversary
In 1995, audiences discovered a new animated film that would become a cult classic and give birth to a franchise whose last installment would surpass the billion dollar mark at the box office: Toy Story. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the saga (it doesn't make us any younger...) and on the occasion of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, it was Pete Docter, the artistic director of the Pixar studio, who unveiled exclusive previews of Toy Story 5. Among the information to remember, the presentation of the episode's new antagonist with concept art unveiled to the public.
While Pixar had announced that it would no longer make sequels to its productions, the Disney subsidiary studio surprised everyone by officially announcing a Toy Story 5. Despite its box office success, the animated film didn't necessarily win over long-time fans. Still, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and company will be back on the big screen. And they'll have to face a new threat in the form of LilyPad.
Woody and Buzz will have to face new technologies in Toy Story 5
As its name suggests, LilyPad is an interactive tablet for children. This confirms the information we had about the plot of Toy Story 5. Indeed, Andy's toys, which now belong to Bonny, will be abandoned by the little girl in favor of new technologies. A first official image of the animated series showed Bonny under a blanket in her bed, holding a tablet or smartphone, facing the famous toys, unsure of what to do. Needless to say, Woody and Buzz don't stand a chance against LilyPad.
Pete Docter has stated that with Toy Story 5, Pixar will explore how "traditional toys confront a world where technology dominates children's attention." Directed by Andrew Stanton, who also directed Finding Nemo and Wall-E, and McKenna Harris, this new installment of the franchise will surprise fans with its pace and visual appeal while retaining the spirit of the saga.
While we knew that Tom Hanks and Tim Allen had responded positively to reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz, Pete Docter confirmed the return of Jan Cusack to voice the cowgirl Jessie, who should also have a leading role.
To discover the confrontation between Woody, Buzz and LilyPad, see you in theaters in June 2026.
