After receiving a well-deserved, well-presented presentation last April, Bungie's next game, Marathon, has found itself in a bit of a turmoil. Despite receiving mostly positive—albeit wary—public feedback, the creators of Destiny have been criticized for asset theft, putting them in a very delicate situation. A situation that, according to some rumors, would have pushed PlayStation to keep a low profile until the game's release on September 23. But that ultimately won't happen.
PlayStation postpones Marathon release date
So no, we can reassure you right away: Marathon is not joining Concord and other The Last of Us or God of War service games that were recently canceled by PlayStation. However, as we learned from Bungie yesterday, the game's release has been postponed to an undetermined date for the time being. "After extensive discussions with our development team, we have made the decision to postpone the September 23 release," the studio stated in a statement published on its official website.
And it seems that the feedback from the first playtests conducted at the end of April has something to do with it. "Through every comment and every real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been loud and clear. We've taken that to heart, and we know we need more time to make Marathon the game that truly reflects your passion," Bungie confesses. "We're using this time to empower the team to create the intense, high-stakes experience [the title] is built around.".
Bungie reveals its future plans
Over the coming months, PlayStation Studio will be busy improving many elements of Marathon, which will continue to be regularly tested during closed sessions in which alpha participants can take part. Among the priority areas of improvement targeted by Bungie are the following elements:
- Improving the survival aspect of the game
- More challenging and captivating AI encounters
- More rewarding matches, with new types of loot and dynamic events
- More intense and strategic combat
- Strengthening the Marathon universe
- Increasing visual fidelity
- More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
- A darker tone that continues the themes of the original trilogy
- Adding more social experiences
- A better experience for solo and duo players
- Proximity chat, so social stories can take life
"We will get back to you later this fall, when we can share our progress and a new release date for the game," the statement concludes, before thanking players for their patience and passion.
