We're not telling you anything new by saying that Luke Skywalker does indeed die at the end of this installment. After having fought Kylo Ren virtually thanks to a projection on Crait, Luke finally succumbs on the planet of Ahch-To.
He dies while observing two suns in the sky, something which is reminiscent of the scene fromA New Hopewhen the character does the same thing on Tatooine.
Despite Luke Skywalker's disappearance,the actor will return in the final installment, The Rise of Skywalker, where he will appear as a Force ghost. Since then, fans have been wondering if they will ever see the Jedi again.
Recently, Mark Hamill announced that he would not be returning to the intergalactic saga. Although he is grateful to have been able to play such an important and influential role in popular culture, he believes that it is time for Lucasfilm to look at other characters.
Mark Hamill reveals the real reasons for Luke Skywalker's death
The 73-year-old American actor has just clarified his comments in an interview with Sunday Today about his decision and took the opportunity to give the real reason for Luke's death:
I don't want to make a grandiloquent statement like, 'It's my decision.' I'm just saying it really felt like a conclusion. My character has finally moved on. I died, ironically, of a Force overdose, I want to point that out.
Already in 2018, Mark Hamill shared a panel from the film's official comic book depicting the death of Luke Skywalker. The actor already mentioned the idea of an overdose by writing on Twitter that "the Force killed Luke" and adding that it was "a bit like a drug addict after a brutal withdrawal who stayed clean for decades and then takes drugs again just once before tragically overdosing."

Finally, in this interview, Hamill emphasizes that Lucasfilm and Disney have not asked him to return in future films in ghost form, but that he would be up for a film set in the realm of Force Ghosts, which would allow him to chat with Alec Guinness, aka Obi-Wan Kenobi.
