Just a few days after the official announcement of the first Xbox portable console in collaboration with Asus, Sony is also talking about its own project. According to the latest revelations from insider KeplerL2, known for his rather credible leaks in the hardware world, the next PlayStation portable console could pack surprisingly powerful components into a small form factor.
This information, if subsequently verified, would be good news for all gamers frustrated by the PlayStation Portal, which isn't a real console but rather a secondary portable screen for the PS5. The insider mentions a machine equipped with a latest-generation AMD processor, with support for upscaling via artificial intelligence, a process similar to the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) introduced with the PS5 Pro. The system would also benefit from 16 GB of RAM, as much as the base PS5, a positive point for the console.
Xbox and PlayStation once again compete on hardware
Although leaks are almost never controlled, this project is not coming at an insignificant time. The unexpected success of PlayStation Portal in late 2023, although limited to Remote Play, seems to have served as a laboratory. Where the PS Vita failed to convince in the face of the rise of smartphones and the lack of major games, Sony is this time returning to a market that has matured, dominated by the Steam Deck, the ROG Ally, and the Switch.
Faced with this, Xbox surprised everyone (or not) this week with the official announcement of its own portable console. Although no complete technical specifications have yet been released, Microsoft has opted for frank and direct communication, marked by an explicit visual trailer during its summer showcase. Xbox is adopting a frontal and assumed strategy, connected to its Game Pass ecosystem.
It is not yet known to what extent this announcement will revolutionize Microsoft's hardware and its intentions in this area, but competition from Sony should challenge the company to do even better. Technical specifications will ultimately weigh in the balance, but for that to happen, PlayStation still needs to officially announce the product's arrival. For now, be careful with these leaks.
