Sony hasn't officially announced anything yet. But clues are piling up. A portable PS6 is indeed in the works. And if the latest leaks are to be believed, it looks like it's going to be much more ambitious than just a remote gaming accessory.
AI to compensate for the power of the PS6 Portable?
The rumor comes once again from the forum NeoGAF. Leaker KeplerL2, often well-informed about AMD's projects, shared several technical details about this as-yet-unrevealed machine. According to him, the console would be the first to feature an AMD APU with artificial intelligence upscaling. The true next-gen from the manufacturer. In short, games could be displayed in higher quality without consuming too many resources. This is a real asset for a portable machine, where energy and power are necessarily limited.
But that's not all. The system would have 16 GB of LPDDR5X memory, a fast and efficient mobile RAM, well-suited to portable devices. A logical choice, since LPDDR6 is not yet ready for the market. On the other hand, the bandwidth would be much lower than that of the PS5, only about a third, which means that data would circulate more slowly between the memory and the processor on the PS6 Portable.
Less raw power
To compensate for this lack on the PS6 Portable, Sony would rely on other solutions. In particular, a more generous cache and better data compression. The processor would have 4 MB of L2 cache and 16 MB of MALL cache. A technology absent from current consoles, but very useful for accelerating memory access and lightening the work of the graphics processor.
Another interesting detail: the console would share its architecture with the future PlayStation 6. It would be based on a modified version of the gfx13, also known as RDNA 5 (or UDNA according to certain variants). This confirms that Sony is looking ahead and is already preparing for the post-PS5 era.
A compatibility behind the scenes?
While Sony has not confirmed anything for the moment about this PS6 Portable, certain signs suggest that the company is preparing. Recently, a low power mode was spotted in the PS5 and PS5 Pro system updates. This profile could well be designed to work with a portable device, reducing performance to save battery life. This reinforces the idea that this machine would not be just a simple remote gaming terminal, like the PlayStation Portal, but a real console in its own right.
It must be said that the competition is getting organized. Microsoft unveiled, at the last Xbox Games Showcase, the ROG Xbox Ally, a gaming laptop designed in partnership with ASUS. And according to some sources, the brand also had a real portable console project underway. But the latter would have been put on hold, while Windows 11 was optimized for mobile gaming, which is still lagging behind SteamOS. In short, the PS6 Portable is going to have some worries.
