Resident Evil 9 was finally revealed at the end of this opening ceremony of Summer Game Fest 2025. Here are the four things to remember from this very first trailer.
Resident Evil 9 saves Summer Game Fest
In the middle of an evening that was rather timid in terms of major video game announcements, Resident Evil 9 finally unveiled its very first images. A first trailer released as the highlight of the show at this Summer Game Fest 2025 opening ceremony. While we weren't treated to a single second of gameplay, the game that will conclude "the Ethan Winters trilogy" has set the scene. Exit the Louisiana bayou and the Transylvanian universe, make way for a true return to the roots.
#4 The official name of the game revealed
As one might expect, Resident Evil 9 will not be the official name of this final installment, as it is called "Requiem". The letter "q" refers to the number 9, and the term requiem obviously evokes the world of the dead, and the idea of the end.
#3 The release date revealed
A little surprise, Resident Evil Requiem has revealed its release date. Although we've been waiting for this conclusion for four years (Resident Evil: Village was released in 2021), we perhaps didn't expect this kind of information for a first video. RE: Requiem is therefore expected on February 27, 2026, or in about nine months.
#2 A brand new heroine
In the FBI offices, young Grace Ashcroft investigates mysterious disappearances, including that of her mother which occurred during the events of Resident Evil in Raccoon City. Those who have played Resident Evil: Outbreak will easily catch up, since Alyssa Ashford, the main protagonist and Grace's mother, is killed at the end of the game. This time, players will play as her daughter in this new nightmarish investigation, judging by her situation. The massive information leak last November was ultimately revealed to be completely false.
#1 Return to Raccoon City
The FBI's sanitized setting is misleading. But the offices give way in the second part of the video to the devastated city of Raccoon City. More than 10 years later, Capcom is making a true return to its roots by placing its pawns "where it all began". We discover the impact of the nuclear warhead, and its iconic devastated police station. "Resident Evil brings the series back to the iconic city of Raccoon City, where the biological catastrophe that shook the world occurred, combining the deeply terrifying aspects of psychological horror with the thrilling action that fans of the franchise know and love," reads the game's synopsis.
Resident Evil 9 would not be the only game in the most famous zombie franchise of the video game world currently in development. Capcom is reportedly developing no fewer than five games simultaneously.
