Sony wants to make it easier to use its DualSense controller on multiple platforms

Since the PlayStation 5's release in 2020, despite a price increase last year, the DualSense controller has been a hit with gamers thanks to its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers—at least in games that actually support these features. Sony is now planning to improve its controller in another area: pairing. By the end of the year, an update will allow the DualSense to be connected to multiple devices simultaneously. This means offering the ability to switch between devices without having to re-pair each time.

The announcement was made via PlayStation's X (formerly Twitter) account. At this point, it's still a rather vague promise, simply formulated as follows: "Want to pair your DualSense controller with multiple devices at once? An update planned for later this year will improve the pairing functionality. Stay tuned for more details."

Switching between platforms made easier

As you'll have understood, for the moment, there are no technical details or concrete demonstrations. Remember that currently, the DualSense doesn't allow you to easily switch from one device to another; each change of host requires a new synchronization, which can quickly become restrictive.

Meanwhile, the competition has already taken a step ahead. Since early 2021, Microsoft has offered a quick switch on its Xbox controllers: two presses of the sync button allow you to switch, for example, from a PC to an Xbox Series X/S, provided the two have been previously paired. A sequence shared at the time by James Shields demonstrated its simplicity.

Pending more details

Certainly, this is a detail for players who remain loyal to a single machine. But for those who use their PS5 controller on multiple devices – PC, Steam Deck, smartphone, etc. – this type of functionality can greatly simplify life. No more repeated pairings, or having multiple controllers for each platform.

It remains to be seen how Sony plans to implement this improvement. No details have yet been released on compatibility, nor on the method of switching between devices. Let's hope the company avoids connection pitfalls or sync conflicts during the rollout. In the meantime, as requested, we are listening.
