James Gunn interacts extensively with his audience on social media. But this presence is a double-edged sword; his profile is also often a complaint desk. When the first images of Superman were released, one sequence in particular was the subject of much discussion. It features Superman, in close-up and in mid-flight. Accused of having overused digital effects, the director defended himself by arguing that no CGI had been used and that only the focal length was responsible for this rather peculiar rendering. A deformed face was all it took for some future viewers to cry foul. When questioned about this controversy, James Gunn reassured his audience: This shot will not be in the film. He explained to Entertainment Weekly:
A decision made a while ago
According to the director and president of DC Studios, it wasn't the criticism of the scene on social media that was the cause. The decision was made a while ago, it wasn't supposed to appear in the promotional campaign for Superman. "Sometimes I'm pretty strict about every shot in a trailer, but sometimes I forget to watch the commercials afterward. So I kind of missed that point."Indeed, the scene wasn't included in the teasers or trailers, but in an advertisement aired during the Super Bowl final. The event is a must-see for major studios, as the audiences for the sporting event allow industry giants to promote their big productions like rarely before. James Gunn should probably have been more vigilant; he's drawn the wrath of Man of Steel fans.
Now he just has to convince them that the game is worth the candle, with the first film in his DCU. After the failure of the previous saga, Warner Bros. is giving its icons a new chance with new actors and, above all, a new approach. Superman is the first film in a long series, involving Supergirl, Batman and his son Damian Wayne, and Swamp Thing and Clayface. While Marvel is struggling, the superhero stable is aware that there is a space to be filled and that it needs to make a strong impact from the start. The answer next July 9 in theaters with Superman starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nathan Fillion.
