While fans of Game of Thrones are eagerly awaiting the release of the final two volumes of the literary saga A Song of Ice and Fire, long promised by George R.R. Martin, Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski (known in particular for The Witcher saga) has gently taken a swipe at his American counterpart.
Martin and Sapkowski: A Clash of Kings of Fantasy
The end of the series Game of Thrones, broadcast in 2019, deeply divided fans of the phenomenon series. Despite its undeniable qualities - particularly regarding the beauty of its production and the intensity of its cast's performances - the series' final season sparked heated debate, particularly regarding the resolution of some of its plots and its rushed nature. Many fans then placed their hopes in the conclusion of the literary saga A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, from which the series is adapted.
However, the American writer seems to be having great difficulty finishing his saga. Despite his repeated promises, no new volume of Game of Thrones has been released since 2011. So much so that George R.R. Martin has explained several times over the past two years that he was considering the possibility that he might never finish his saga... Statements that some of his fans find hard to accept!
During the 2025 edition of the Opole Book Festival, Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski - author of the Witcher saga, better known as The Witcher- came to present the latest work in his fantasy cycle: The Crossing of Crows. This is a prequel novel set during Geralt of Rivia's early years as a witcher and will be released in France in October 2025 by Bragelonne. On this occasion, he took a small dig at his counterpart George R.R. Martin.
"I'll write something else. Relax. Don't worry. And unlike George R.R. Martin, whom I know personally, when I say I'll write something, I'll do it.""
However, once the dig is in, the writer is more compassionate and understanding with the American author: "Between us, I understand it perfectly. Because if someone had done something like that to me, by filming a series based on my books, then getting ahead of what I had planned to write, I would also wonder what the point of writing was anymore." As you will have understood, according to Andrzej Sapkowski, the main reason for the difficulties George R.R. Martin is having in finishing his saga is that the HBO series cut the rug out from under his feet.
