The new James Bond is not in the cinema but in a video game

Sony took advantage of the few hours of respite before the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 to organize a State of Play. The company shared numerous trailers for upcoming games on its console. It gave pride of place to AAA productions, as the conference recap confirms, and a highly anticipated gem was finally revealed in images. It's the famous Project 007, the next game in the James Bond franchise.

IO Interactive revealed its name a few days ago. 007 First Light hasn't yet shown its gameplay but is focusing on its more than interesting narrative structure. As if to stick to a certain trend, the studio decided to explore the hero's origin story by retracing his beginnings as agent 007. This is the first time that a game in the franchise has moved away from the cinematic works to take its own narrative flight.

The story will be completely original, which is a point that fans will rightly criticize when the title is released. Indeed, a simple inconsistency in the lore could be fatal for IO Interactive. Obviously, the company is on familiar ground when it comes to espionage. Remember that the studio is behind the Hitman saga, and we can see quite a few elements of the license in the first images of 007 First Light. Finally, the game has already been confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a release planned for 2026. Gameplay will likely be shown on June 7th during the IOI Showcase.

New look for a new life

To date, IO Interactive has not revealed the identity of the actor who performed the motion capture to play James Bond in 007 First Light. The studio has made it clear that this version of James Bond will be entirely original, with no connection to the actors who played the character in the movies. But we can clearly see an inspiration from the face of Patrick Gibson, the actor from the series Dexter: Origins.

You won't be able to count on the game to reveal in advance the identity of the next James Bond in the cinema. On this subject, discussions are still ongoing with several personalities. At the top of the list, we still find the talented Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Tom Hardy, Idris Elba and Regé-Jean Page have more or less been ruled out for several months. The official announcement should not be long in coming.
