There are periods that systematically bring their share of rumors. It must be said that some manufacturers have well-defined habits when it comes to their statements. With rare exceptions, Big N holds its Nintendo Direct in the same months, the same for Xbox. As for PlayStation, the story is pretty much the same, except that you never know where you stand. General State of Play, on a single game, PlayStation Showcase, the brand has been a little less predictable lately. As the end of May approached, rumors surrounding a more or less substantial statement were growing. A renowned insider suggested that the Japanese company would make a major announcement today, and guess what? It didn't miss!
When will the next State of Play be?
After the rumors and gossip, it's time for the official announcement. This time it's official, PlayStation will indeed participate in Summer Game Fest 2025 and not just with the planned spotlight around Death Stranding 2 on Monday, June 9 at 4:00 a.m. Don't worry, there's no need to stay up that late to discover the next announcements around the PS5. The next State of Play will take place this Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 11:00 p.m.,French time. The Japanese publisher will dedicate this 40-minute broadcast to its console's upcoming releases, both its own productions and, above all, those of its partners.
As always, the presentation will be broadcast live on the manufacturer's official channels, including Twitch and YouTube. You can also count on your faithful servants to keep an eye on things that same evening to deliver all the juicy news live.
Which PS5 games can you expect during the State of Play?
And now for THE big question: what to expect? Since Kojima himself will be presenting Death Stranding 2 in a separate conference, we can automatically rule out the next PS5 exclusive. This leaves room for those to come, including Ghost of Yotei, which is just waiting to reveal what it has in store, even though it already looked very promising when it was in a less advanced state, according to Shuhei Yoshida, a former bigwig of the brand. Housemarque had also announced the color: the gameplay of Saros, its next game, would be revealed later this year. This State of Play seems like the perfect time to do so.
Ghost of Yotei, Marvel's Wolverine, what PlayStation games to expect?
As for other PlayStation studios, the multiplayer game FairGame could make a comeback, having struggled to convince internally. It still seems too early for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet to show up again, but Naughty Dog could create a surprise by showing its third secret game, which some believe to be Uncharted 5. Santa Monica Studio also has a surprise project up its sleeve: a spin-off based on God of War, although we don't know anything more. A reveal during the State of Play is likely at this stage, as is the return of Marvel's Wolverine after years of silence. Insomniac Games has always been clear: the PS5 game would be shown when the teams are ready. Let's hope that this is finally the case. For the rest, we know that Guerrilla Games has been looking into Horizon Online for a while, while Bluepoint is finally working on its own license after having made excellent remasters and remakes.
We can also expect the announcement of various PC ports during State of Play in June 2025. The candidates are no longer very numerous and if the majority are still shouting the name Bloodborne, another is impatiently waiting for Gran Turismo 7, Astro Bot or even Demon’s Souls. And Sony being Sony, we might well be in for a surprise remake or remaster.
From Resident Evil 9 to FF9 Remake, third-party publishers might have some surprises in store for us
As always, PlayStation's partners will once again answer the call. The publisher should once again highlight games from all horizons, ranging from independent to the next big releases from its usual comrades like Capcom or Square Enix, to name a few. And speaking of them, there are two games that are the subject of numerous rumors. Starting with the one that's been getting all the attention lately: Resident Evil 9. It is indeed rumored that the next installment of the saga will make its first announcement during this State of Play in 2025.
The conference could also be an opportunity for Square Enix to put an end to the torture of many fans. We've been hearing about the FF9 Remake for several months now. And on the eve of the game's 25th anniversary and the latest artwork shown, we hope the publisher will finally reveal it to the world. As for the big games, Metal Gear Delta seems like a good fit, as do the upcoming 2K releases like Borderlands 4, Mafia 4, and, fingers crossed, Judas. We can also hope for a little spotlight on Lost Soul Aside and, of course, surprises galore. So, check back in a few hours to find out what this State of Play has in store for us.
