While Sony remains silent on its next generation of consoles, rumors are piling up around a particularly intriguing project: the famous new PS6 portable console stamped PlayStation, expected in 2028. Dubbed Project Jupiter, it could accompany the launch of the highly anticipated PS6.
A latest-generation chip for the PS6 Portable
According to a new report shared by the X account @Jukanlosreve, this future PS6 Portable machine would include a chip designed by AMD and manufactured using Samsung's 2nm SF2P process, a technology that is still not very widespread but extremely promising for low-power devices. This would allow the console to ensure good battery life while maintaining solid gaming performance, in a portable format. This new SoC would be designed from the outset as a low-power gaming component, which shows Sony's intention to offer a hybrid machine capable of balancing power and mobility.
Also, another notable point mentioned in previous leaks of the portable PS6 concerns compatibility with PS5 games. Project Jupiter could use a "shader binary compatibility" system. What's the point? This would allow PS5 games to run without requiring any specific adaptation from developers. In short, Sony would be considering a form of technological continuity. All between the current generation and the next, a strategy reminiscent of the seamless transition between PS4 and PS5.
A parallel launch of the home console?
According to several concordant sources, the PS6 Portable is planned to be released at the same time as the PS6, i.e. by 2028. This could mark a real revival of Sony's hardware strategy. The manufacturer has not launched a dedicated portable console since the PlayStation Vita. The latter's discontinuation had also left the field open to the Nintendo Switch.
For the time being, Sony has not confirmed the existence of this PS6 machine nor revealed an official plan. The future generation of consoles remains unclear. It is therefore recommended to remain cautious, even if the multiplication of sources is starting to outline a credible project.
