Alongside the release of the magnificent video for The Witcher IV, powered by Unreal Engine 5, CD Projekt Red announced that it was drawing inspiration from two excellent RPGs to design their open world.
The world of The Witcher 4 opens up to players
We were all amazed by the magnificent video for The Witcher 4 shown during the State of Unreal, Epic Games' conference that highlighted the power of Unreal Engine 5. The graphics engine used to design the sequel to The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, the cornerstone of the modern open world.
That of the next Ciri's adventure promises to be sumptuous, judging by the images released, captured in 60 fps on a standard PS5. Although this is ultimately only a technical demo and not the final gameplay of the game, we must admit that the region of Kovir, explored on foot and on horseback by the witcher, makes you want to travel. Its snow-capped mountains, the play of light and shadow, the work on the bodies, or the density of the relief: the next open world promises an unforgettable experience (what about the NPC routines, however). At least, that's what this technical showcase wants us to understand before the gameplay elements are implemented.
Two masterpieces of the video game industry lead the way in inspiration
CD Projekt has the source material for The Witcher, namely Andrzej Sapkowski's books, as a resource and inspiration for building its characters and open world. Which doesn't mean the Polish studio won't dip into other open-world RPGs here and there. Co-CEOs Adam Badowski and Michal Nowalowski looked to two big industry games to develop The Witcher 4: Kingdom Come: Deliverance: 2 and Baldur's Gate 3.
Regarding Warhorse Studio's medieval RPG, CD Projekt Red's bosses were inspired by its freedom of choice, its immersion in this bohemian Middle Ages, and certain characters described as "robust.""There are so many options, you can change the world, it's great. And we would like to follow this trend as well.". Kingdom Come 2, it should be noted, takes a realistic approach by incorporating no fantasy elements into its RPG.
As for Larian Studio's excellent title, which, it should be noted, won the Game Award in 2023, CD Projekt says it draws inspiration from interactions. "In Baldur's Gate 3, there are excellent characters, but sometimes your great freedom of action leads you to use different design tricks. But a lot of elements concerning how the characters interact with the world and what it does were a source of inspiration for us."
Expected - at least - in 2027, The Witcher 4 is slowly but surely being revealed. We remember that before this demo, the studio had offered us a first trailer, presenting Ciri struggling with an evil creature. Several players then noticed a difference between the character design of the witcher in the announcement video and the recent images captured under Unreal Engine 5. "A raw sequence, without facial animation, lighting, or camera lens effects," CD Projekt was quick to point out, speaking of the first trailer. When the first gameplay images are revealed, this same Cirilla could also appear different to fans.
