In the space of six months, The Witcher 4 has received a first announcement trailer at The Game Awards 2024 and a technical demo on PS5 to highlight the capabilities of the new version of Unreal Engine 5. After clarifying the situation regarding this second presentation of its next game, CD Projekt RED has also smoothed over another element of the first installment of this new saga at the helm of Ciri.
A Cirieuse update on the heroine of The Witcher 4
After a first trailer that caused a sensation, but also raised some eyebrows regarding its heroine, Ciri, The Witcher 4 showed itself again at the State of Unreal, to illustrate the engine's new capabilities to display convincing open worlds in a stable manner. Even though it was a PS5 tech demo and not a gameplay presentation, we still got to see Ciri in a different light. As a reminder, in the game's first trailer, many felt that the face of Geralt's adopted daughter had changed too much, to the point of being almost unrecognizable to them.
Following the recent tech demo of The Witcher 4, a representative from CD Projekt RED wanted to clarify this point in an interview with Kotaku. We learned that the model of this older Ciri would actually be a direct copy of the one from The Witcher 3, adapted for MetaHuman, the impressive character creation technology of Unreal Engine 5. The representative, however, points out two subtle changes between the two models: "slightly raised eyebrows, and a more relaxed eye area."
In any case, this model shown in the tech demo would be exactly the same as the one used for the first trailer for The Witcher 4. The fact that Ciri had a rounder face was then to be attributed to the fact that it was a CGI cinematic, with different calibration and lighting. Remember that The Witcher 4 is in full development, and it is not expected to be released before 2027/2028. Many things can still change, but this would not apparently be the case for its main character.
