The Witcher 4 should take inspiration from your new favorite RPGs

While a recent technical presentation allowed us to discover what the highly anticipated The Witcher 4 could look like, CD Projekt took the opportunity to express itself more broadly on the game, and in particular on its ambitions in terms of gameplay. The studio cited several inspirations from modern RPGs that have been particularly well-received by the public.

The Witcher 4 should be inspired by another very good RPG

Since 2015, RPGs have changed a lot. The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 or Kingdom Come: Deliverance has redefined expectations. Complex mechanics, total freedom, realistic immersion… Players want more. And CD Projekt Red has understood this well for The Witcher 4.

Adam Badowski, co-director of the studio, explains that the game will be inspired by this new wave. The studio is looking closely at what Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is doing, particularly with its “simu-like” systems: dynamic weather, realistic reactions, and advanced interactions with the world. This kind of approach is popular. And CDPR wants to integrate it, without betraying its foundations for The Witcher 4.

A DNA faithful to the foundations

CD Projekt insists on one point: the game will not be a copy. The title will not become a turn-based RPG like Baldur's Gate 3. The idea is rather to strengthen the real-time experience, with more depth and options in the gameplay. Yes, the studio wants to enrich the interface, the mechanics and the player's freedom. But without ever neglecting the narrative aspect. The writing will remain at the heart of the game. The characters of The Witcher 4 will still be as well-developed. And the moral dilemmas, still just as present. Finding the right balance between freedom and storytelling: that's the challenge.

CD Projekt Red promises a more vibrant, denser, more credible world. The environment will be a character in its own right. And all this, without abandoning the unique visual identity of the saga. The studio also specifies that it will not use generative AI to write its quests or dialogues. The goal? To preserve the quality, the tone, and above all, the human soul of the writing.
