Max, or HBO Max (we don't know what to call it anymore), the streaming platform from Warner Bros., now offers Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in two versions: the classic, well-known to fans, and an enhanced version called "Magical Movie Mode." The latter allows you to watch the film with a whole bunch of bonus features that appear on screen throughout the story: commentary from director Chris Columbus, anecdotes from the set, deleted scenes, winks, and other unusual information.
A "pop-up" version for fans
This is not a simple mode to activate in the settings: "Magical Movie Mode" is a title in its own right in the Max catalog. You must therefore select the correct version before starting playback. Warner Bros. had already offered this special edition to mark the film's 20th anniversary in 2021, with a DVD and Blu-ray release.
Released in 2001, the film adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first novel by J.K. Rowling, who was not the problematic person she has unfortunately become since. It tells the story of Harry's discovery of the magical world, played by a very young Daniel Radcliffe, and his first year at Hogwarts, the school for wizards. It is also an opportunity for the young hero to learn the truth about his parents' death and to bond with his lifelong companions, Hermione and Ron.
What some may not know is that Steven Spielberg was approached to direct the film, before declining. The project was finally entrusted to Chris Columbus, known for Home Alone. A choice that has lastingly shaped the aesthetic and tone of the saga.
For fans of physical media, "Magical Movie Mode" also exists on disc, included in recent editions of the film. But for immediate viewing, Max remains the only online platform where you can discover this special version.
No new film adaptation is planned at the moment. However, a series project is in development at Max. Little information has leaked, except that the main roles have been assigned and that broadcasting could begin in 2026 or 2027. This reboot should offer a version more faithful to the novels, with one episode per chapter or almost.
