Thanks to a partnership between Stellantis, Ample, and Free2Move, around a hundred Fiat 500e models will benefit from revolutionary charging technology. It will allow these small electric city cars to be fully charged in just 5 minutes. Here's how.
If there's one thing that works against electric cars, it's the sometimes long charging times. To address this problem, manufacturers are constantly seeking to innovate in the field. For example, we're thinking of the work being done on solid-state batteries. Recently, Stellantis has also shared significant progress on the subject, with accumulators capable of going from 15 to 90% in just 18 minutes.
The Nio brand has also distinguished itself with its famous electric battery replacement stations. Launched in 2022 in Germany, the principle is very simple: why not replace the battery of your electric vehicle with another one instead of wasting time recharging it? The company Ample has become the spearhead of this technology.
These Fiat 500e will be able to leave in 5 minutes, flat!
Thanks to a partnership with Stellantis and Free2Move (editor's note: subsidiary of the car giant specializing in car rental), Ample is preparing to equip more than a hundred Fiat 500e with its removable battery system. The three companies had just announced a first test phase in Madrid at the end of 2023.
And it is precisely in the Spanish capital that Ample plans to deploy its system. "At Free2move, we are proud to take a bold step in electric mobility by integrating the iconic Fiat 500e with Ample's innovative battery swap technology. While the experience remains seamless for our customers, this innovation allows our teams to operate more efficiently and sustainably," says Ahmed Mhiri, CEO of Free2move. "This is a major step forward in making electric mobility more practical, more flexible, and more accessible to all."
As mentioned above, around a hundred Fiat 500e vehicles with removable batteries will be available for rental to the people of Madrid from mid-2025. It now remains to be hoped that this system will become more widespread, particularly among rental companies operating in France.
