Since 2020 and the launch of the first Macs with Apple chips, Macs with Intel chips have been on borrowed time. Each version of macOS is an opportunity for Apple to further reduce the number of Intel Macs compatible with new versions of its operating system. macOS 26 — at least that's the name that could be given to the future version — should be no exception.
Software support doesn't stop
According to AppleInsider, four "old" Macs would be deprived of macOS 26: the MacBook Pro (2018), the iMac Pro (2017), the Mac mini (2018), and the MacBook Air (2020 with Intel chip). These models were the oldest to support macOS Sequoia, the current version of the system released last fall. Apple won't be stopping software support for these machines, however: the manufacturer continues to provide security updates for years.
This is the second year in a row that Intel Macs have been deprived of the latest version of macOS. The list could therefore be a little shorter this year. macOS 26 should be compatible with the following Macs: MacBook Pro (2019 and later), iMac (2020 and later), Mac Pro (2019 and later), Mac mini (M1 and later), Mac Studio (all models), and MacBook Air (M1 and later).
While a handful of Intel Macs will benefit from macOS 26, that doesn't mean they'll be entitled to all the features. Apple is increasingly developing new features that are only compatible with models with the M1 chip and later. We'll know for sure on June 9th, during Apple's WWDC keynote.
